In your letter of the 8th July, you suggested 750 guineas as the fee for your visit to Hong Kong of 6 weeks later on this year, and that in addition hotel accomodation should be included in your expensos.

On this latter point I find that it is not the practice for us to cover the actual cost of hotel accommodation in the case of such visits, but it is usual to pay, in addition to the fco, and whilst actually in the colony, a subsistence allowance at rates and in accordance with conditions laid down by
In the the Treasury for visitors abroad generally. case of Hong Kong the allowance 15 at the rate of 25/- a night, but if official hospitality were extended to you for any part of the visit a reduction by two-thirds would be necessary. No allowances are payable en route where the fare covers cost of accommodation, meals, etc. In order to save time, we have gone ahead and applied to the Treasury for a Colonial Development and
elfare grant to aover expenses in connection with your visit on the basis of a fee of 750 guineas plus subsistence allowance at the above rate. I should be most grateful if you would kindly confira that this arrangement would be satisfactory from your point of view. I will let you know as soon as we have the Trossury reply to our application. The Accountant, Colonial Office, will let you have some notes on financial matters before you leave. Perhaps you would care to contact hin direct at 15, Victoria Stroot, as he may be able to assist you in your arrangements?
